Prepare Before Kickoff

Check the competition rules, review Law changes, and have a useful pregame conversation with your crew. If you know the teams, think about situations you might need to manage.

A little preparation means fewer things to figure out on the fly.

Read the Game

Watch where play is heading and move early. Being close helps, but you also need an angle that lets you see the challenge clearly.

Learn From the Tough Days

Whether it’s a failed fitness test or a difficult match, identify something specific to improve. Give yourself a practical next step instead of just saying, “I need to get better.”

Move On After a Mistake

It’s easy to replay a questionable call while the game continues around you.

Take a breath, check your position, and focus on what’s happening now. Review the earlier incident after the match.

Stay Open to Feedback

Ask a mentor what they saw, what you could have done differently, and how that might help. Leave the conversation with one thing to try next time.

Manage the People, Too

Sometimes a short explanation helps. Sometimes you need a firm boundary. Pay attention to your tone and body language, and keep conversations useful.

Keep Working Toward Your Goal

You won’t feel motivated every day. Consistent habits keep you moving toward an upgrade, tougher assignments, or more confidence.

After your next game, jot down:

You don’t have to fix everything at once. Keep learning and bring what you learn to the next match!
